Video: Juneteenth noted with pomp through North Portland Tomorrow.

Portlanders praise Juneteenth with the Freedom promenade through North Portland. A community festivities was held following the parade on the Jefferson High School sports field. Despite the rain, hundreds attended this year's Juneteenth carnival on Saturday in Portland, which featured a Freedom Parade, municipal food, euphonious artists, visitor speakers, arts and hovercraft vendors, community services, prizes, and a entertainment belt for children. Portlanders also noteworthy with a community anniversary on the Jefferson High School sports forte Saturday.



Although Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation on Sept. 22, 1862, servitude was still was carried out in parts of the United States, predominantly Texas, for over two years. It wasn't until June 18 and 19 in 1865, when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to implement the emancipation of the slaves, that all were declared free. Juneteenth June 19 commemorates the date in 1865, more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation, that presumption came to the behind slaves in Texas. Portlanders also acclaimed with a community commemoration on the Jefferson High School sports meadow Saturday.
