Payback. Jacksonville's Safe Harbor Boys Home becomes TV talking picture Yesterday.

Doug and Robbie Smith's boat-filled speculation as the founders of Safe Harbor Boys Home has caught the perspicacity of Hollywood. How could it not? It's almost too inspirational to be true. But the Smiths estimate Hollywood got it just about right, aside from that giant unruly undulation that threatens their characters in the movie's original scene. Dramatic license, it's called.

"Safe Harbor," a Hallmark Channel movie, premieres at 9 p.m. Saturday, with Treat Williams and Nancy Travis as the Smiths, a married Jacksonville twosome who volunteered to accompany in troubled boys on their sailboat more than a quarter-century ago. They're still doing it at a area off Heckscher Drive on the St. Johns River.

Here are excerpts from a chat with the Smiths about the motion picture inspired by their lives. What's it get a kick out of to care for your exuberance on the screen? Doug: We still can't take care of it without crying. The stories are real. The key moment we catchword it we had to lacuna it - we couldn't get through it.

Now we can peer at it again and take care of our composure. Robbie (laughing): Mostly. How terminate did they prick to the true story? Doug: They stayed as detailed as you could under any circumstances enmired and still defend a two-hour patch frame. They condensed it and made it work. Phenomenal.

Robbie: I was very, very contented at the point it turned out. I had no perception - I didn't judge my energy could be made exciting. So you literally were planning to skim around the world before you took your pre-eminent boys in? Robbie: Yeah. That was the plan. Plans change.

And the big cloudburst and the liberate shown in the movie? Doug: Any seafarer has some ton stories, but I don't meditate I've ever seen a wave that big. Robbie: That was a scrap dramatic license. However, it does get your attention. Early in the talkie they show you warming to the image of taking in the boys. Was it take pleasure in that? Robbie: They show me as more interested in doing it than I as a matter of fact was.

I wanted to countenance Doug, but he was more of a driving exact than I was. Doug: It was more me, faulty to pay back. But that's trivial stuff. It had to be engaging - it's not a documentary. Robbie: Nobody would want to chaperon a documentary about us.

Did they accurately render your Christian faith? Doug: I muse they did a excellent job. They took the kids to church, and when they obvious to deliverance the caricature [in a storm], they said, "God assist us." I've done that a numbers of times in storms.

But dedication is a special thing, I don't want to be pushing it - it's a choice. Everyone has a choice, and if they decide not to settle upon God, I'll still beau them, still undergo them. The movie shows boys a few years later, vowing to save in touch.

Do they withhold in touch? Robbie: Absolutely. Doug: From all over the world. Robbie: They call, Mother's Day calls and everything, even though we don't effort to exact over the parental role. Doug: A lot of them right us Mom and Dad because they've never had a mom or dad.

The film gets some laughs from the discomfort your characters have in taxing to manage some associate set together. Robbie: Well, yes, some of that's still true. Doug: It's still true! We're always looking for a vacation. (He laughs.) A soul mate of ours manages a caravanserai downtown.

I deliberate we're the only ones he lets go in there for hours at a time. Robbie: It's a progenitors newspaper! You can't explain that. Is there often a significance in authentic vivacity congenial the one in the movie, where you in reality can notice a boy's viewpoint on life getting turned around? Doug: All the time. We're volunteers. We don't get paid. But that's what keeps us here. I dream Nancy Travis did a only OK job.

Robbie: She is a doll, isn't she? Doug: She's almost as dainty as Robbie. Robbie: That's a surely aware retain element to say. Doug: Well it's true. What make do you over the moving picture will have on Safe Harbor? Doug: I mark it will absorbed us in calls from people who essential our services.

That's what happened with People magazine. It secure down the phones on the unbroken island. Robbie: There will be relatives who want to give us funding, which is a good thing, and with there will be people around the state and the land who want to duplicate what we do.

Doug: There are a lot of suitable people in America who want to accomplish a difference. They just don't skilled in what to do.
