Simply imagining scenes such as a unclouded time or a twilight sky can cause your pupils to trade size, a new study finds. In one experiment, participants looked at a hide with triangles of different levels of brightness. So "Because humans cannot without prompting constrict the eyes' pupils, the presence of pupillary adjustments to fictive light presents a strong case for mental symbolism as a process based on brain states similar to those which arise during realistic perception," study leader Bruno Laeng, of the University of Oslo in Norway, said in the story release pills. This fact-finding may potentially enable scientists to probe the mental experiences of animals, babies, and even patients with painful neurological disorders, the study authors suggested.
